Humor Sapiens Bulletin, December 2023

Humor Sapiens Newsletter, December, first to you as always

End of year mood
We reach the last month of the year 2023, with the negative emotions produced by wars, terrorism, drug trafficking, violence of all kinds, extreme ideologies of the right and left coming to power, religious fundamentalisms on the rise, nationalisms, phenomena natural disasters multiplying, economic crises, ethical and moral crises, the devaluation of education, culture, art, good taste and many more problems that make life difficult for us on this Planet. In short, as has happened in every December, but even more so in the Decembers of recent years, our intense desires to achieve a better world in the coming year are repeated.

And the way we can achieve this is through the only two weapons that are within our - and everyone's - reach: love and humor.

He is an illustrator and cartoonist, he is also a researcher and has published several books. He could say something that is easy to find on the Internet: for example, that he is a comedian who has obtained around fifty awards and mentions in prominent national and international competitions and that his drawings have been selected for exhibition and published in almost a hundred catalogs of competitions from around the world...

Oh, humor, oh humor | Great clown duels in classic Hollywood cinema

By Félix Caballero Wangüemert
(Writer, comedian and journalist).

In the October Humor Sapiens newsletter I published an article about the figure of the clown, to which I intended to pay a heartfelt tribute. I now return to the matter focusing on the figure of the clown in classic Hollywood cinema, especially in the transposition of the traditional circus couple of the whiteface or clown and the august or red nose. The figure of the clown was created by Joseph Grimaldi (1778-1837), considered the first modern clown; that of the Augustus, by Tom Belling (1843-1900)...

Humor judío

Por Don L. F. Nilsen
(Assistant Dean. Humanities Division. Emeritus College. Arizona State University.

In 1978, psychologist Samuel Janus conducted a study that found that, although Jews made up only 3 percent of the American population, 80 percent of the country's professional comedians were Jewish. The percentage of comedians is lower today not because there are fewer Jewish comedians, but because in response to ethnic and gender identity movements, many new comedians come from groups that were previously underrepresented. Belle Barth, Danny Kaye and other Jewish comedians substituted Yiddish for English when they wanted to fool English-speaking censors with off-color jokes...

Milestones in the History of Humor

Cadiz Carnival

Review: Its main characteristic, which differentiates it from the rest of the carnivals in the world, is the primacy of humor channeled through the different artistic modalities that are the entertainment of the town, such as chirigotas, troupes, choirs, quartets , the ballads, etc.

Data: This famous carnival has its origins at the end of the 16th century. A version of this type of carnival was replicated in Uruguay at the beginning of the 20th century.
